The number of furniture overturned accidents has decreased in recent years, but thousands of people are still injured each year. An estimated 18,000 Americans -- nearly half of them children -- were rushed to emergency rooms in 2020 with injuries caused by the dumping of furniture, television sets or other electrical appliances. According to a report released last week by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there have been 581 cases of overturned furniture in the United States since 2000, with four-fifths of the victims being children. Thousands of people are still being treated each year for injuries caused by overturned furniture, although figures show that the overall number of injuries and deaths caused by “Product instability”has fallen in recent years, others have died in what officials call “Preventable accidents”. “We are pleased that there has been a decrease in injuries from overturned furniture in recent years,”said Aleix Horn Sarich, CPSC chairman. However, thousands of children are still injured every year and too many children are at risk of dying from overturned furniture. People either don’t know there’s a risk in their lives, or they don’t think it’s going to happen when there are adults around.” Unsafe furniture and other household items are known to pose a danger to users if they are overturned. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, designing unstable furniture or placing it on unstable surfaces, such as carpets or sloping floors, carries a risk of collapse. Children are particularly vulnerable to furniture overturned accidents. Last year, Swedish furniture giant Ikea paid $46m to the family of a two-year-old boy in California who died after being hit by an Ikea Dresser.

Federal legislation known as the Sturdy Act directed the commission to establish a mandatory national stability standard for clothing storage units. The bill passed the 2021 in June and has been introduced in the Senate. According to Horn Sarich, most capsizing tools that allow people to attach furniture and other objects to walls cost less than $20 and can be installed in 20 minutes. As early as 2015, the U.S. consumer product Safety Commission launched the Anchor It! Campaign, which promotes the importance of attaching furniture and other objects to walls and explains how this can be done.
